| Sponge
Iron is mainly used as a source of metallic
iron units in steel making operation. Following
are the sponge iron and users: |
|
- Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF)
The maximum use of sponge iron
is in Electric are furnace units. Sponge
iron is used as a substitute for ferrous
scrap. In electric arc furnaces, sponge
iron can be used up to 50% without any
modification in the furnace. However,
for use in higher quantity, up to 100%,
continuous charging facilities have to
be incorporated.
- Induction Furnaces (IF)
Induction furnace units are using
sponge iron in their charge mix in the
range of 30 to as percent without any
modification in the furnace.
- LD Converters of Integrated
Steel Plants
Liquid metal produced from blast
furnace contains excess carbon. In LD
converters, the excess carbon is removed
by reaction with oxygen. However, this
raises the liquid metal temperature, which
has to be cooled by addition of solid
scrap. Use of sponge iron, as a substitute
to solid scrap has been introduced with
certain techno-commercial advantage.
- Foundry cupolas
Up to 25 percent of the charge
mix of cupola could be replaced by sponge
iron.
