Face gears are gear wheel and are round in shape. Face gears are mortised with cogs into its face in conjugation with lantern pinion. Face Gears consist of disk-shaped gear in combination with helical, spur and conical pinion. Face gears is also known as contrite wheel, crown gear, crown wheel, and face gears. Face gears has planar root surface and planar pitch surface. Both surfaces are perpendicular to the axis of rotation.
Face gears are mainly three types like standard face gears, offset face gear and helical face gear. Face gears have a pressure angle as the pinion and sharper cutter diametrical pitch. By calculating the shape of the tooth, and frontal pressure the pressure angle can be calculated.
In face gears the power is transmitted at angle, which can be concave, convex and right angle based on the drive angle. It have ring of teeth on one side. The gear teeth are tapered towards the tooth's center.
